The primary indicators for student learning

Student learning should focus on academic achievement and wellbeing. Indicators for wellbeing could be students' motivation, a growth mindset, a sense of belonging or connectedness to their school, classroom and the people in it. Academic achievement indicators would be through assessments and evaluations, conferencing, feedback, observations, portfolios, discussions, monitoring learning over time etc. Observable and non-observable data can monitor both indicators of student learning. Student behaviour is also an indicator of learning as it is a form of communication. Behaviours such as enthusiasm, being present and engaged in conversations about the topic indicate understanding. When students are disruptive or dysregulated, there is little learning taking place. When conducting a teacher performance appraisal (TPA), I often observe students and their engagement in the lesson or activity. Are they directing their attention to the presenter(s)? Are they passive (not on task, withdrawn) or actively engaged (responding to questions, taking notes, problem-solving)? Gathering evidence of learning is a valuable tool for teachers to reflect on their own practice and where the most significant needs or potential for learning growth for their learners are.
